É fácil pensar em alunos como um grupo (minha classe das 09:00 ou minha classe das 10:30) e não como indivíduos. Muitas vezes descrevemos esses grupos de forma negativa. Eles são irritantes. Eles são preguiçosos. Eles são frustrantes. Eles não conseguem pensar. Eles não conseguem se preparar. Mas os alunos são indivíduos únicos, com suas próprias esperanças, sonhos, fraquezas e aspirações. Não é importante para eu gostar dos meus alunos, mas é importante para mim se preocupar com eles. Ande em sua próxima aula e olhe para os seus alunos como seres humanos distintos. Eles não fazem parte dos móveis. Eles são as pessoas. Não desperdice tanto tempo em julgá-los. Basta perceber que eles são humanos e, se eles sabem disso ou não, eles precisam de sua ajuda como seu professor. Como Madre Teresa de Calcutá disse: "se você julgar as pessoas, você não tem tempo para amá-los."

Tenho escutado muito dos meus colegas que a qualidade dos alunos caiu nos últimos anos. Penso comigo que não é isto: suas habilidades e prioridades mudaram, pois o mundo mudou. Mesmo com um monte de tarefas que assumi neste semestre na administração da minha universidade, mantive uma disciplina na graduação. Eu preciso deste contato com o jovem aluno de graduação. Preciso saber que o que aprendi até hoje pode fazer diferença para o aluno da UnB. O que Hoyle propõe é muito difícil.

Custo da Corrupção

O Valor Economico fez um levantamento do custo da corrupção na Petrobras (Investigação de Corrupção já Custa R$386 milhões, Fernando Torres, 22 de setembro de 2015). O resultado sintético está na figura abaixo:

Naturalmente que somados os custos indiretos este valor de quase 400 milhões de reais é muito maior. Com a corrupção a empresa perdeu grau de investimento, teve o mercado de crédito fechado, inviabilizou lançamentos de ações, reduziu a moral dos funcionários e muitos outros aspectos.

Japão bane cursos de humanas e ciências sociais das universidades públicas

Many social sciences and humanities faculties in Japan are to close after universities were ordered to “serve areas that better meet society’s needs”, it has been reported.

Of the 60 national universities that offer courses in these disciplines, 26 have confirmed that they will either close or scale back their relevant faculties at the behest of Japan’s government, according to a survey of university presidents by the Yomiuri Shimbun.

It follows a letter from education minister Hakuban Shimomura sent to all of Japan’s 86 national universities, which called on them to take “active steps to abolish [social science and humanities] organisations or to convert them to serve areas that better meet society’s needs”.

The ministerial intervention has been denounced by one university president as “anti-intellectual”, while the universities of Tokyo and Kyoto, regarded as the country’s most prestigious, have said that they will not comply with the request.

However, 17 national universities will restrict the recruitment of students to humanities and social science courses – including law and economics, according to the survey, which was reported by the blog Social Science Space.

It reports that the Science Council of Japan put out a statement late last month that expressed its “profound concern over the potentially grave impact that such an administrative directive implies for the future of the HSS [humanities and social sciences] in Japan”.

A empresa Uber esta investindo, em conjunto com a University of Arizona, num projeto de veículo autônomo (Why Uber is pouring Money into developing autonomous cars). A razão é simples:

Uber pode ter mais ganho que qualquer outra empresa no desenvolvimento e adoção dos carros autônomos. Se for possível substituir o custo dos motoristas com os carros autônomos, a Uber pode reduzir drasticamente os preços das corridas, tornando uma opção mais barata para muitas pessoas que possuem carros.

Por que as ações da Volks despencaram?

ON SEPTEMBER 21st, the share price of Volkswagen (VW), the world's largest carmaker by units produced, fell by 17% in just one day. Investors dumped the firm's shares after it was accused by America's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of cheating emission tests on its diesel-powered vehicles. Although Volkswagen's chief executive, Martin Winterkorn, has apologised for faking the data, the carmaker could still face a fine of up to $18 billion—and even more if regulators find that it has committed any more misdemeanours in Europe and Asia.

Yet the fall in the firm's share price is not simply the result of the scale of the potential fine. The final figure may well be much less, particularly if VW co-operates with regulators. Investors have also been spooked by its other problems, which the latest scandal have made worse.
