IPO do Manchester

O Manchester United irá realizar IPO em Singapura para captar 1 bilhão de dólares.Por que um time de futebol quer realizar um IPO? De acordo com o Financial Times, os proprietários da equipe,a família americana Glazer,irão utilizar os recursos do IPO para pagar as dívidas do clube, num total de 849 milhões dólares.

Por que Singapura? Qual é a razão para não abrir capital em Londres ou Hong Kong?Londres não foi escolhida , pois há desconfianças locais quanto ao modelo de negócios de clubes de futebol. Em relação à cidade chinesa, o clube inglês está apto a realizar o IPO na bolsa local, no entanto ,as exigências e os custos de uma oferta inicial são maiores que em Singapura. Segundo Kevin Brown, é uma estratégia para evitar um exame minucioso, por parte dos órgão reguladores de Hong Kong, da situação econômico-financeira do Manchester . Ademais, o clube quer evitar uma identificação excessiva com os chineses, já que diversos fãs estão espalhados por outros locais do sudeste asiático. A seguir a opinião de Kevin Brown:

"The club's opaque finances are seen by sceptics as a key reason why Manchester United decided to locate its IPO in Asia rather than in London, where there is scepticism about the business models of football clubs whose revenues largely disappear in ever-inflating player salaries and transfer fees,'' Brown writes."The air of mystery has been compounded by the club's surprise choice of Singapore for its IPO, rather than Hong Kong, as had been widely expected – a decision described as "hard to explain" by one banker involved in early discussions on the listing. People with knowledge of the proposals say the driving force was a desire to avoid over-identification with China, and to tap the very large fan base among the 600m people of relatively well-developed South-East Asia, for whom Singapore is a natural financial hub. However, the financial sector in Hong Kong is awash with rumours that the switch is somehow designed to allow the secretive Glazers to avoid close scrunity of Manchester's United's finances, including the relationship between the club's debts and their own."
